The Role of Parents in Education

The Role of Parents in Education

The traditional way of education in Thailand is formal and teacher centric. However, this has been changing in recent years to increase the involvement of parents in their children’s learning process. Parents are very important in the education of their children from a young age, as they can either positively influence and encourage them or can demotivate them.

Parents are the first teachers and have a significant effect on the development and growth of a child. Parents teach their children and dependents about the basics of life even before they start school. The way children grow up and the values they learn from their families can influence their future achievement and success.

Supportive parents take time to follow on their children's education by making time to support them in their studies, make sure they have the necessary learning materials and resources and help at home, to a certain extent. Supportive parents also take care of the health and diet of their children as well as making sure they are free from stressful situations and enable them to focus on their studies.

In later years, children learn how to interact with the larger society as they slowly understand the world around them and be able to function as positive and productive members of their communities. Teachers help in this regards through the transfer of knowledge and skills and supporting the different abilities of learners at different stages of their development and learning.

There are different ways of involving parents in the education of their children in Thailand. Some examples are –

1.       Parent-School meetings – are useful so that parents can get information about school policies, curriculum, extracurricular activities, available facilities and other things offered by the school.

2.       Parent-Teacher Meetings – Many schools have meetings at the end of terms or semesters. They also arrange meetings at other times to discuss the performance and progress of learners, and to find out how to support them better.

3.       School Events – parents are encouraged to attend school events, programs and celebrations as part of the school community.

However, there are some challenges that limit the involvement of parents in Thailand. According to Yotanyamaneewong and Tapanya, many low-income parents or those with a disadvantaged socioeconomic background might not be able to support their children’s studies because they may be too preoccupied by their needs to survive economically. As a result, their children may be left with poor quality education or experience failure in school.

In general, the positive involvement of parents in the education of learners is crucial as it can decide on the direction their children will take, which eventually can affect the contribution to their communities.
